Gaudmother is a textile experiment led by Britt Rodriguez (b. 1991, NYC) with the support of an evolving cast of production assistants, artists, and collaborators. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2016, Gaudmother’s focus transitioned from embroidery to weaving to building coats from synthetic hair. Currently, rug making is their focal point, but, Gaudmother is a multidisciplinary project that reserves the right to change their mind and follow their whim at any point in time.
Gaudmother is here simply to impress Britt and to challenge the idea of work under capitalist standards. On a larger scale, Gaudmother has a sweet dream every night that they might encourage participation by disenfranchised communities in Philadelphia and around the world to use art as therapy, distraction, and self actualization.
